Atlas of Bretonnia

Atlas of Bretonnia · guides and documentation

The modders' workshop

Six guides to modding a Total War: Warhammer III campaign map, written while porting the Season's map, then the documentation for expanding the map to all of Bretonnia: where the project stands, how to contribute, the hex grid, keys, terrain, splits and passes.

The workshop guides

For anyone who wants to mod a campaign map. The pitfalls are first-hand; every guide has been reviewed against the official documentation and the tools' code, and each one also exists as plain text (Markdown) for AIs, listed in /llms.txt.

Where to start? I want to…

A community project

It's a community project: I fully intend for everyone to take part. Anyone who wants to contribute is more than welcome.

Charles

The expansion only exists on paper so far: this is the right time to shape it. Every skill helps: lore experts, cartographers, campaign modders (CAIME, Terry, the game's tables), players who test. Nothing to download: the mod is private, for personal use. The Season campaign is being tested, and the expansion is only a plan.

How to contribute

Where the project stands

In order: a beautiful, playable, solid Season campaign, with the game's 9.0 update and the Red Duke reworked, being tested; then long games; then the map expansion.

  1. Done · September 2026The Warhammer I map, playable in Warhammer IIIOriginal relief, forests, rivers and set dressing; ten playable lords, the Sisters of Twilight still being tested; 87 missions.
  2. In progressBeautiful, playable and solidNearly as beautiful as in Warhammer I. The 9.0 update (per-lord victories, reworked vampires, the Red Duke reworked) is being tested: coded and seen in short automated test runs (2 to 5 turns); the Duke's new features (Richemont's Decree, the Tomb of Galand, Abhorash's favour…) and the voiced prologues: coded but not yet seen in game.
  3. NextLong gamesNo long game played yet, balance not measured: every lord over hundreds of turns, before the map expansion.
  4. Planned · with youThe expansion to all of Bretonnia32 regions, 15 provinces and 11 seas on paper, checked against the lore (true mountain ranges, Repanse de Lyonesse in the north, Norse and Druchii raids chosen), to see on the map.

The expansion's work ahead

What it will take for the expansion to exist in game, in order. Help counts at every step.

  1. Settle the map with the community: names, borders, factions, splits, passes (the ideas on the map).
  2. Extend the CAIME layers to the new frame (560 × 575 hexes instead of 400 × 440).
  3. Paint the expansion's terrain: the atlas relief, the drawn eastern range, forests, rivers and coasts, in the image of the current map that came from Warhammer I.
  4. Create regions, provinces, settlements and seas in the game's tables, then the factions and the start position.
  5. Test, fix, repeat: test games, as for the Season.

The map's grid

Logical hexes of the current map: x to the east, y to the north, row 0 in the south. The current map.hex is 400 × 440; all of Bretonnia would be 560 × 575. The new frame starts 120 hexes further west: add 120 to current x values, y values do not change.

Keys and data

Proposed keys: wh_dlc05_<province>_<place>, seas wh_dlc05_sea_<name>. Working data: extension_regions.json (provinces, regions, seas, splits), extension_routes.json (roads, passes, access), carte_papier_v2_donnees.json (places, factions, region grid), aspect_extension.json (each new province's terrain: measured ground types, relief, climate, set dressing), carte_papier_v2.svg (the map).

Province, sea and faction names follow Total War: Warhammer III's where they exist; the others come from the sources cited on each card, and those found on a single fan map are flagged.

Terrain, province by province

The map's “Biomes” base follows CAIME ground types; the “Relief” base gives elevation. High mountains = impassable edge, as in the current map; every new region was checked reachable hex by hex. For each new province: its terrain (measured on the map), relief and climate, the landscape to render, the set dressing to place, and what Creative Assembly already has for these places in Immortal Empires. The terrain should look like that of the current map, which comes from Warhammer I.
